About Us
For over 120 years the Hebrew Free Loan Association of Baltimore (HFLA) has provided interest-free loans. When it was founded, the HFLA may have helped a peddler start a business by lending him money to buy a horse and cart.
Today, we provide loans for a host of needs ranging from medical and dental bills, bar and bat mitzvah expenses, wedding expenses, home repair, education expenses, small business expenses, sudden emergencies, and much much more. But the principle is the same as it always has been, we are here to help our fellow Jews in need.
Since 1898, we have helped tens of thousands of families by providing “interest-free loans” – to those qualified members of the Greater Baltimore Jewish Community who are:
Seeking a loan for a worthwhile purpose
Unable to reasonably obtain a bank loan within a realistic time-frame
Able to repay the loan over a reasonable time period
If necessary, able to provide references and co-signers willing to stand behind the borrower and their loan
HFLA’s activities are rooted in the age-old Jewish tradition of Chesed – Kindness.
The Biblical mitzvah of interest-free lending is one of the highest forms of charity, as it renders assistance, while preserving dignity and promoting self-help. We believe, as Maimonides did, that one of the greatest levels of charity is to support our fellow Jews by endowing them with loans to help them remain independent.
